Good place to work but covid has damaged experience

      Pros

      - Young, smart coworkers - Travel benefits, obviously - Scott Kirby is a genius, and a really good leader - Analysts are entrusted with lot of responsibility - Really good work/life balance

      Cons

      - Salary--while perfectly decent-- is not competitive considering the extremely marketable skillset many have (data analytics) - Travel benefits worth much less during covid- massive loss of value - Senior company leadership (CEO, president, etc.) doesn't care about management employees as much as they do frontline; after last year's furloughs, Scott made a video about how he was dedicating himself to bringing furloughed flight attendants and co. back to work, but brags in Wall Street calls about management head count reductions - Not a lot of room for career growth after a certain point-a lot of managers and directors have been around for a while, and aren't going anywhere soon. UA promotes to fill spots, not to reward hard work

      Pros

*Travel benefits *Health and wellness benefits *Genuinely friendly, courteous and caring co-workers and colleagues from around the world

      Cons

*Some systems are not user-friendly and it can be difficult to find someone who knows the answer or responses are delayed since the workforce was affected by a reduction in force in 2020 -- those who kept their job are doing the work of 2-3 people. *Back to office communications is inconsistent across divisions

      Cost cutting

18 Aug 2021 - Senior Analyst in Chicago, IL
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Travel benefits are a plus. Located downtown. Hours are nine to five. People enjoy traveling. Since people quit often you can move up faster if you are qualified.

      Cons

The company restructured after the pandemic so employees are overworked. There is high turnover and backfills are not trained properly. The workforce is largely union, so non-union positions with no influence are largely impacted by the cost cutting.

Potential to be great, Very Poor Management

7 Dec 2020 - Coordinator Airport Operations Station Support
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

The experience of working in a fast paced, exciting work environment such as an airport. Working with new people daily. Being a help to someone in need. Adding value to the operation system. Travel benefits

      Cons

Management is very poor at certain Hubs IAH Fake unity in front of Senior management Low salary Favoritism Messy Office politics— they all play by this and if you choose not to then you’re ostracized. Specific Managers are very unprofessional and allow their personal feelings dictate the way they treat employees Retaliation against employees who try to address grievances and nothing is done to prevent this unless you have an ally in upper management/HR So much gossiping and talking about each other - which creates a hostile work environment. Something needs to be done because management encourages it or turn a blind eye since it isn’t about making the company money.

Solid union contract, poor management relationships

      Pros

Strong union contract Travel benefits Diverse but popular crew bases

      Cons

Management has poor and sometimes vindictive relationship with union employees Union focuses it's support on non-contract issues towards senior employees Little job security and a hostile work environment

      It's a comfortable workplace

22 Jan 2021 - Project Manager in Chicago, IL
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Travel benefits (it's standby so a lot of people don't use them often since getting stuck at an airport gets old after a while), nice/fun co-workers, convenient Willis Tower location. You learn a lot about the airline industry. The company does a good job being forward-thinking about the customer experience.

      Cons

United isn't the place for a young professional looking for long term career growth. The majority of employees have 20+ years at the company, mostly in similar roles. The company does not do a good job thinking about the employee experience. The company hesitated in going remote at the beginning of the pandemic, and many employees struggled to learn how to use Teams in the remote environment. A lot of the employee experience is antiquated.
