Low Pay: jobs with no degree requirements earn more than STEM lab technician jobs
24 May 2023 - Lab Technician in Salt Lake City, UTRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Beautiful Campus, can have flexibility depending on job/boss
Cons
UofU continues to boast of gaining increased research funds while researchers get the same abysmal pay despite inflation. I was offered a salary less than living wage of SLC ($18.06 per MIT COL calculator) as a lab technician ($15-18.50/hour range in listing) which requires a STEM Bachelor's degree. Have now seen postings for "Parking enforcement officer", "Animal Care Technician", "Bus Driver" and "Medical Assistant" all $18+ with either sign-on bonuses or a raise within 6 months. These jobs do not require a bachelor's degree and are entry-level. STEM degrees are a lot of work and we are told as first-gen college graduates they open up career opportunities. The guidance counselors should check the job website, because it is just not true. Should have gone to industry for better pay, but I also want to go to grad school and was told my best chance is an academic university lab. Now regretting my decision and questioning if grad school is even worth it.

Housing & Residential staff
19 May 2023 - Housing Ambassador in Salt Lake City, UTRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
flexible schedule(you can work basically whenever you want and you can change the schedule regarding to the classes. If you want more money, you can work more this week, because they were usually short staff when I worked.) friendly & chill vibe of the team friendly supervisor (he is most understanding and great employer that I ever had.)
Cons
what you're gonna do is basically a customer service. so whatever any disadvantages CS job has, this job also has. dealing with student's parents, need to provide precise information, organizing / replying emails..

Great place to work when looking at total comp
12 Apr 2023 - Senior Systems Administrator in Salt Lake City, UTRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Lots of vacation and holidays (18 holidays, 4 weeks vacation, 10 days sick). Different vacation versus sick pay accrual pools. Two options for retirement savings. 401B at 14.2 % of your salary, as well as the ability to add money to other managed funds like IRA. Great insurance and other benefits Performance based raises Unlikely to be affected by economic ups and downs to a major degree
Cons
Base pay is a little low. My section of the Org is fairly small without much more opportunity for advancement. Raises are performance based, but with a low cap (2% to 5% per year), and not much of an ability to negotiate pay raise without getting a new job. Very slow process to bring in new technical talent, and difficulty attracting top tier talent, and a tendency to keep bringing in project managers who are easy to hire, but often generate more meetings and questions rather than solutions
