I worked at Valley Medical Center part-time

    Pros

Some of my coworkers were great and I really enjoyed the doctors I worked with.

    Cons

I really struggled with the resignation around the use of dated technology. Generally speaking, people made the best of what they had, but it sometimes felt like I was the only one interested in making any workflow improvements. Equipment was used well past its relevant lifetime - while it was still functional, it was being used for a far longer time period than is standard

I have been working at Valley Medical Center full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits are good and there is union representation

    Cons

Culture of fear and favoritism. The union is seen as a bad thing by management. Management is not honest and is aggressive about pushing out staff they don't personally like, despite their good work performance.

    Advice to Management

    HR recognize upper level bullying.

I have been working at Valley Medical Center full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Intelligent nursing staff. Interested in evidenced based medicine.

    Cons

Upper administration failure to see big picture of all areas other than what they come from. HR not supportive when there is a serious concern. Would rather coach out healthcare professional with known addictions than to actually provide information to get them help. Those people just end up at other area facilities and are a risk to others. Several director level new hires not given proper support and mentoring, All let go during their first 90 days. At some point they need to realize it’s not the new hires fault and look at the lack of support for new managers.

    Advice to Management

Provide support to all areas. Mentor new leaders, don’t throw them to the wind and hope for the best. Stop bringing back people who didn’t work out years earlier. Recruit to hire the best, don’t settle to fill a hole. Listen when staff bring up bullying behavior. People talk, offer similar fair wages for similar positions, nothing makes someone feel cheated and used that they type of salary practices you promote. Satisfied patients begins with happy employees, your forget this with the government’s push for satisfied patients. You look at this approach backwards. You have lots of good leadership walking out your front doors and you don’t seem to notice/care.

I have been working at Valley Medical Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The medical providers are universally skilled, dedicated, and professional.

    Cons

Callous, inept senior office administrators who create a toxic culture that contributes to inefficiency, petty and harmful staff behavior, immature backstabbing, and roguish attitude.

    Advice to Management

Watch out for reckless and voiced discrimination by management against employees with disabilities, such as "Do we really want to keep HIM?" Watch out for the distorted egos of leaders who literally believe and declare, "I command a room." (Obviously, this person does not comprehend why people are REALLY staring at the flawed graduate of a "degree mill" institution?) Deal with the embedded practice of supervisors who recruit, hire, and retain people who are just like them. Otherwise, you will have a staff of petty, narcissistic, mean-spirited, myopic, walking catastrophes who undermine the best efforts of medical providers to fulfill the mission. Incivility erodes safe, quality medical practice. Take action to correct your "bad hire" so when the inevitable problems arise, you are not complicit.
