    I worked at Vulcan full-time

    Pros

Reasonable compensation, good benefits, great co-workers.

    Cons

Don't expect to have a personal life, nor employment security. You'll be subject to the whims of the Owner and management. Upper level management talks a good game about the value of employees and employee empowerment. Talk is apparently cheap. In actual practice a culture of intimidation and quick termination exists within mid-level management, and HR backs them up.

I have been working at Vulcan full-time

    Pros

Good benefits and some cool perks.

    Cons

I have never seen anyplace that wastes more time and energy because of poor planning. Everything is reactionary. EVERYTHING. I understand when you work for a dynamic individual that things can change quickly but this is unbelievable and unsustainable. This company goes through people like nothing I've ever seen. If not for a core of dedicated tough people this company would sink.

I have been working at Vulcan full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Talented, smart, hard working colleagues. Good benefits and compensation.

    Cons

Several previous posters mention a culture of fear and they are spot on. It's a culture of fear that will not change because it comes directly from Paul Allen. "Owner meetings" as they are called are unpredictable and can go well or poorly depending on Paul's mood. Senior management operates on his whim and therefore the company lacks strategy and clear level-headed directional planning. Senior management will do anything to keep their well-paying jobs: they repeatedly move/alter project goals/direction and blame their employees when projects don't go as planned. Self-preservation at Vulcan is senior management's primary goal. A series of poor hires at the C-suite level have sent the company reeling. The technology department, in particular, is in upheaval and the new leader has a complete disregard for his team. Company morale has taken another massive beating.

I have been working at Vulcan full-time for less than a year

    Pros

This company has very smart people who desire to do well. The benefits are good and the 401k match is great. The work is interesting. There are celebrations (Cinco de Mayo) with beer and wine.

    Cons

Am approaching my six month anniversary and realize that I have made a mistake. There is a climate of fear. If you make a mistake or express an unpopular opinion, you go on the radar screen for being fired. Everyone is just a disposable pawn. This is a small company, yet the CEO doesn't interact with the employees. My coworkers tell me that the way to survive is to stay under your desk and keep your head down.

I worked at Vulcan full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Opportunities in some positions to work on interesting projects. Good benefits.

    Cons

Opportunities in some positions to work on the dumbest ideas you've never heard of; be prepared to be assigned work based on the fact that they fired the person in front of you. Armed with no tools (including the reason why the previous person failed), no support, no expectation of succeeding, no additional salary and no change in title, you will also be gone someday. Do not expect the bonuses or pay raises you are promised when hired.
