I worked at Wilson Elser full-time for more than a year

    Pros

All of the attorneys are genuinely nice people. They really do care about their fellows/personnel, and management is available to listen and be flexible when needed. Lots of cooperation between the attorneys, and they really stress on being professional and ethical (very rare nowadays!). As an Associate, as long as you are billing your hours you will not get problems in taking some days off for a vacation or other...

    Cons

No 401k contribution; high billable requirement (2000 - 2100 to be bonus eligible); type of work in the Las Vegas office is pretty much only personal injury; lower pay compared to other firms that are the same size, especially when counting the high billables. Of Counsel/Partnership track is not really clear. I wish there a discussion with each Associates as how to get there from the very beginning, maybe creating...

    Advice to Management

With a few changes, this office could really be an amazing place to work at. Billables are really high, especially for an insurance defense firm where you are not really allowed to bill for all your activities. Allow for some positions part-time, completely remote, and/or hourly. It is hard, but you will be able to retain more talents.

I worked at Wilson Elser full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Lots of associates and partners to gain insight and legal advice. Free CLEs and free pizza (sometimes). My supervision partner is usually helpful and I gained a lot of litigation experience. Firm name recognition for lateral purposes.

    Cons

2100 hours, which is impossible unless you pad your hours or work on the weekends. I found 2100 hours to be extremely difficult in light of the low salary. Also, they have been cutting down their support staff, so now associates also have to be "secretaries" as well.

    Advice to Management

Add support staff and lower your billables.

I worked at Wilson Elser full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    1. Great experience (except for the no trial part, see below) working in a variety of case types, handling everything from the answer up until trial. But experience is what you get when you don't get what you want, right? Which is a real salary commensurate with the job. 2. Pretty good training and education. Decent guidance on how to become a real lawyer and do what you don't learn in law school. 3. The respect and...

    Cons

    1. Baited and switched from before I even accepted the offer. After I got the offer, I asked about the work hours for attorneys and was told it varies, some attorneys work 9-6, some work more. I was not told about the insane 2100 billable hour requirement until after I started. Some nights, I worked past midnight. 2. Raises are so minimal. If you have not been there for a full year, expect around 1.5%. The maximum annual...

I worked at Wilson Elser full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Diverse work load, lots of litigation

    Cons

Awful experience - high billable requirement, low morale, no mentorship from senior or supervising attorneys, work/life imbalance, cut throat atmosphere, support staff is overworked.

    Advice to Management

    Start over, seriously.

    Pros

Gain litigation experience quickly; gain familiarity with other local firms and judges. Paid maternity leave. Free CLEs and CLE tracking.

    Cons

High turnover of associates. Comparably low salary in light of the heavy work load. Long hours and Saturdays expected. Politics. Heavy focus on billable hours requirements.

I have been working at Wilson Elser full-time for more than a year

      Pros

I worked at Wilson Elser right out of law school. It was a great place to get litigation experience.

      Cons

Like any insurance defense firm, a heavy, stressful workload is inevitable.

I worked at Wilson Elser full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

Free parking. Custodial staff are really nice characters. When partner meetings end you can scavenge left over potato chips and sodas. You learn to endure hardship and realize you should've rethought major life decisions. Employee assistance program came with free visits to a therapist. You'll need them.

      Cons

We scar(e) because we care. This sums up my employer's motto in deed, if not in word. He soaked up billables, padded hours in the last weekend of every month. He secretly spies on his associates' email accounts. The group got routinely audited and associates could barely meet their hours, which resulted in grievance sessions where every time entry would be discussed and scrutinized, as a group. Mind you, those group meetings...

I have been working at Wilson Elser full-time for more than a year

      Pros

Wilson Elser is great for a young attorney as it provides Free Cles, training opportunists and ability to go to court and depose parties within 6 months.

      Cons

2100 billable hours for 62-80k is a joke. Attorneys will work harder and stay if you either pay them more or lower the billables. Don't be shocked when 10 attorneys leave every 6 months.

      Advice to Management

Pay your attorneys more or lower the billables. Talent is literally walking out the door, which is terrible since Wilson Elser really provides great opportunities to learn and be a great attorney.
