I have been working at Wilson Elser full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Very diverse practice areas. Deep litigation experience. International reach. Family-first work environment, including part-time arrangements. I've grown more as an attorney at Wilson Elser and been with the firm longer than any other office, and look forward to many more years to come.

    Cons

    Complex work from day one

I worked at Wilson Elser full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great benefits: medical, dental, vision, 401k, profit sharing, commuter benefits, expense reimbursement, low billing requisite, paid time off, scholarships, CLE events

    Cons

This place was a sad good bye because I wanted to like working here, see pros section. But it was impossible to want to appreciate such a toxic work environment. Egos here run very high whether from attorneys and/or senior staffers. Putting people down or talking down to them as if they are idiots seemed to be the norm -- unknowingly, at least to my knowledge, to management. People who work here are... combative, unappreciative, micromanaging, and opinionated. Couple that with high levels of stress, indecisiveness, and a habit to order people like their petulant children is a receipt for disaster. There is no sense of community or teamwork.

    Advice to Management

There is a fine line difference between skill and downright rude behavior. Just because an attorney has a bar license does not give them the right to disparage an employee. With that being said, the same applies to high seniority staffers. Working in the legal field requires a team effort, not a single person. Pay attention to your staff and be more involved in what goes around. Make them feel as if they have a... voice, not just a number on a balance sheet.

    Pros

Good Big Law reputation; offices accross the U.S.; stability ; friendly work environment.

    Cons

Not much guidance given to associates, and work experience is highly dependent upon the partner with whom the associate is working. Salaries lower than most Big Law firms. Heavy focus on billable hours. Not much room for autonomy or advancement. Very little actual diversity amongst attorneys.

I have been working at Wilson Elser full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great work environment, national law firm with offices everywhere. A great law firm that provides excellent training and opportunities for young lawyers. National training program, in-house CLE's with teaching opportunities, pro bono and a commitment to diversity.

    Cons

Overall transparency needs improvement. Compensation could be better and hourly billing standards are high.

    Advice to Management

Work on transparency across the board. Increase associate compensation and work to reduce high turnover rate.

    I worked at Wilson Elser

    Pros

I tried really, really hard but couldn't come up with any.

    Cons

A very toxic work environment. Management fosters an atmosphere of tattling, back-stabbing and complaining. There is discrimination in every area - race, religion, sexual orientation, weight, age, etc. The partners dump all the work on the associates and paralegals all the while berating them about their billable hours so they'll get more money at the end of the year. The secretaries are worked to death --- 6-8... attorneys to each secretary but they are still expected to do admin/billing work. Huge turnover constantly in all areas. The good people leave and they replace them with whoever they can get cheap - little to no experience needed. They don't pay vendors or experts fees for greater than 90 days as a rule so you're constantly fending off phone calls about unpaid invoices. They don't even reimburse expenses to employees on a timely basis. Human Resources is completely ineffective - people go to them with complaints and they "sweep them under the rug" and then that person is put on a hit list to be terminated as soon as they can paper their file. There is no chance of advancement. The pay is paltry and raises are pretty much nonexistent and salaries were recently "capped."

    Advice to Management

They are never going to change. They know the serious problems but ignore them. That's why they will always be the big firm that nobody's heard of. I only have the one star rating because zero isn't a choice.

    Pros

Various range & exposure to different areas of law. Some people are nice

    Cons

Large firm who cares about stiffing their hard working employees and putting even more money into partners pockets. They discriminate beyond belief. They screw people over and treat them like they are a dime a dozen and hold no value. I refer to this place as an HR nightmare, which guess what? THE HR Dept. IS A NIGHTMARE and they DO NOTHING to secure an equal, non discriminatory work environment. I've never seen so... many disgusting acts or persons and in a law firm nonetheless.

Sell your firm, or fire everyone in management/HR and start over. This firm is disgusting.

I worked at Wilson Elser full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The pros of working at this firm is, you raise your profile as an attorney because they are well known, and you have a lot of resources at your disposal to help your practice. It's a good stepping stone to aid you in finding a better job elsewhere. The benefits are also pretty good.

    Cons

The pay is shockingly low for a firm this large, especially considering that they expect you to bill 2100 hours a year. The work environment and morale at the firm are terrible, because the attorneys are underpaid and overworked, and as a result, the firm is a revolving door. The firm only cares about your billable hours, and does not value the professional development of its attorneys. If you do make your... billable hours for the year, the bonus they give you is a joke. This is no place to build a career over the long term.
