Good experience as a part-time Research Consultant

Sep 28, 2017 - Quantitative Research Consultant in Mumbai

      Pros

      1. HR and support team are friendly and responsive. 2. Good initial learning experience for those new to quantitative investment management. 3. Plenty of effort is put into teaching research consultants some broad-level techniques. 4. Good pay for the amount of work required. Basically a great role for college students looking to get into something like quantitative investment management.

      Cons

The only con I came across during my short tenure is that all alphas/trading strategies, and all research involved therein, becomes the intellectual property of the company. Consultants retain none of the IP.

smart colleagues, challenging work, but too much bureaucracy & lack of transparency

      Pros

      - smart colleagues - challenging work, you wont get bored

      Cons

      - managers don't respect researchers and don't listen to their suggestions. There are two things I cant stand in a person: lack of integrity, and talking too much about things that he does not really know. Unfortunately my local GM has both. - bureaucracy, lack of transparency, many room for favoritism - very little left for new employees. Most of the pie is occupied by veterans, who are also given more privileges and have much better access to data / information. PMs have little incentive to use new alphas. New researchers ended up with very little bonus I think Igor is a good leader, however he has allowed a big gap to exist between him and the researchers, and the management who is filling the gap is incompetent. Hopefully he will realize that.

job is for those who are lazy

Sep 24, 2017 - Quantitative Researcher in Bangkok

      Business Outlook

      Pros

nice office, snacks and other benefits, good office location

      Cons

Absolutely meaningless job. The routine of the hedge fund is just like a big whale eats, they swim around with their mouths open and filter food through their baleen bristles. Exactly the same way the researchers work, they have to produce loads of meaningless (absolute lack of research) strategies (automatized) alphas and then never had a chance to improve, discuss with traders or research further. They're looking to hire PhDs, but you don't need any education at all, just a basic coding skills to produce these worthless "strategies". Even farmers can do this job, not joking they once organized an event that everyone could take part and some farmer performed quite well. If you enjoy challenge yourself and like to do something that makes sense at all, don't even consider this job opportunity. If you like a lazy lifestyle and don't care what you're doing at your workplace for OK money, then this job is for you.
