I worked at Zillow full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The company is headed for some exciting times in the real estate space, affording many to enjoy the job security that lies ahead, along with excellent perks.

    Cons

Not only is the work on the data ingestion side dull, but management has shown themselves to be myopic in its decisions and seldom thought long-term. Even if they did think long term, they never properly communicated any long-term plans with the team. Concerns by subordinates are often gone ignored, and the manager is quite often rude. Rudeness could have been redeemed had they actually been competent, but on numerous...

    Advice to Management

Listen to your subordinates with an open mind. Years of experience is meaningless if you are not willing to listen to differing perspectives, especially if bad decisions are being made. If you are confident in your past experience, you should be ready to at least provide your own perspective based on your experience rather than to be dismissive without comment.

I have been working at Zillow full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Cutting edge technology. Great work-life balance. Good Perks. Catered lunch on Fridays. Diversity! "Build your own idea" week events. If people aren't satisfied with something, they listen, discuss, and take necessary action.

    Cons

Not very many cons, at least not in my first year of employment. Zillow is a medium-sized, fast-growing company. You may find some cross-office communication problems as the company doesn't follow a `remote-first` approach.

    Advice to Management

Keep it up with the great work, you guys are awesome! Maybe start considering more approaches to improve communication and hiring of distributed teams. You may be able to hire great talents if you consider allowing them to work from home in different cities.

I have been working at Zillow full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Depends on your team. Some teams are using very new technologies. Work life balance is awesome.

    Cons

Management is sometimes a bit loose. Need better tech leaders.

I have been working at Zillow full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Zillow is already one of the best tech companies you can work for, and they are always striving to be even better. They treat their employees like responsible adults (discretionary time off, rare after hours work, etc). Zillow is also great because it allows you to grow your career the way that you want to; you aren't forced to take a management role to progress.

    Cons

Some of the release / engineering processes can be frustrating. Also, I disagree with the way they've historically chosen development managers. That being said, that's another area where I think Zillow is trying to improve.

    Advice to Management

Stop promoting your strongest developers to management roles. Their technical skills are needed and they usually make poor managers.

I have been working at Zillow full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The people I have worked with so far are the best and the brightest I've ever met. Zillow stays true to itself and employees by hiring the best, and providing a great environment to do their best.

    Cons

Its often cloudy for some or all of the day in Seattle.

I worked at Zillow full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Awesome physical environment. Zillow tends to hire smart people who also have empathy towards others. Lots of room for growth in the business. Decent compensation. No on-call. A lot of promotions from within.

    Cons

Slow release process. It's being worked on but was shipping once every 2 weeks, and sometimes once a month, which can be frustrating when what you work on requires iterations. A lot of tech stack is result of hack week projects that doesn't seem to have much ongoing support. Some teams lack clear charter.

I have been working at Zillow full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Witnessing tremendous growth, but still maintaining rock solid culture. Really like how management cares about employees and listens. I mean it, employee surveys are taken seriously and actions are taken based on that. Innovation is at the core of the company. Always thinking big and moving fast to achieve those goals. I had an incredible internship experience this summer at Zillow. From day one I was given real work that mattered to my team and what I needed to complete it quickly.
