Great people to work with.

Management is terrible and there is very limited or no opportunity to grow. Pay is also bad.

Zulily Merchandising
1 Jun 2023 - Assistant Buyer in Seattle, WARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Good company culture, flexible working hours. Notably high percentage of women at all levels of leadership. Company very open to transfer between departments (ie. between studio/creative or account management or merchandising) if you are looking for a career shift
Cons
Merchandising is undergoing a structural shift in how roles are defined and how to be promoted; current setup is vague, not a place for fast promotional growth. Company also was recently acquired by an investment firm; have yet to see what changes this will bring.

Pros
- Great company on resume - Great people if you are on the right team
Cons
- extremely unorganized - constant change - you have to teach yourself how to do the job through learning labs - must be very good at Excel but they dont tell you that

Not for Seasoned Professionals

There are really great people who work here.
Cons
Zu has a startup mentality and the business can't grow up. It doesn't understand how certain job functions serve and benefit the company. They cut valuable teams during their multiple layoffs and now operate with no DE&I, talent development, or internal communications. The CEO doesn't communicate about the state of the business regularly, leaving the team completely in the dark. He makes hasty, self-serving decisions and does not care about how it will impact the team that has to support it. Team members with a lot of experience don't get treated as subject matter experts because the company only consults on those with a lot of tenure or someone with a higher title (even if they are in a different department). There are no career paths here so don't expect to advance and there are no opportunities to develop.

Wouldn't EVER work there again
12 Jan 2023 - Marketing Specialist in Seattle, WARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
-Had a great manager when I first started, before she left after I had been there for 4 months.
Cons
Where to start? -Toxic work environment with micromanaging, racist leaders, sexual harassment, and management that creates division -Incompetent managers that have zero leadership skills -Hire managers and higher-level roles (senior specialists) that have ZERO experience where it's needed. Often specialists have to train up which is awkward and wrong -Favoritism is common -"Stress tests" AKA trying to drown your employees with work because you (management) told leadership (VPs up) that we would do things without consulting the team -Managers and up that have ZERO clue what their employees do for work, to the point where they will completely lie at meetings about what people do for their jobs. -Act like a start-up even though they've been in business for 10-15 years, AKA it's sloppy. -Feels like you are on a sinking ship -Upper management complains about retention issues so they force employees to fill in surveys, then literally do nothing with the data. -To get promoted, it's not based on your work, it's a popularity contest where you have to get the directors to like you (even though they've never worked with you). Managers have next to no say in your promotion. How archaic is that?! -Awful, expensive healthcare -HR does nothing to help you unless you're upper management (the usual).

- Former Employee★★★★★
Pros
- Decent healthcare (0 plans covered by the company) - Decent work life balance - A (now very) small handful of genuinely nice and and competent people...all of which are currently trying to jump ship. - Some cheaper items on zulily.com are at a discount to you as an employee.
Cons
-Low pay , poor benefits. - Feels like they are letting people with real knowledge and experience leave to hire entry level people as replacements due to lack of budget. - 10 days of PTO which include sick days. You will not find a worse offering anywhere in Seattle. Directors and above do get separate sick days. - Random firings and layoffs. - Those recently promoted are difficult to work with and have a challenging time explaining their thoughts in a clear and calm manner. Their slap dash vision and wants completely change on a whim, creating more work and confusion for everyone else. Seems like an overall lack of experience; resumes of managers and above are overall unimpressive. -Micro-aggression misogyny thrive here, even the internalized type from other women in upper management. I have known a handful of talented women who left due to this type of toxicity. - They push DEI talks but there is a lack of diversity, inclusion, and self awareness in the company. Examples: Manager pinging on of the few black employees to do work on MLK Jr. Day (when it was a company wide holiday). Laying off POC people who have been at the company for some time and replacing with white hires.
