What is a Market Research?

A market researcher is responsible for collecting and analyzing data information to make informed political, social and economic decisions. Market researchers specialize in either quantitative or qualitative research. Quantitative research involves working with statistics and percentages and can deliver quick results while qualitative research involves analyzing opinions. Market researchers may be employed by a company (known as client-side), where they collect information on customer opinions, investment, and marketing trends. Majority of market researchers are employed by marketing agencies varying in size with different companies and industries.

A Bachelor's degree in Marketing or Statistics along with demonstrable experience is required for market researchers positions. Successful candidates possess excellent analytical and numerical skills and are deeply creative with great problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities for Market Research

  • Consult clients about objectives and requirements of projects
  • Formulate a plan and present it to senior management or a client
  • Carry out quantitative or qualitative research
  • Design specific research methods such as questionnaires
  • Utilize statistical software to manage and organize information monitoring the progress of research projects
  • Manage and organize information with statistical software conducting qualitative or quantitative surveys
  • Analyze and interpret data to identify patterns and solutions, including surveys and focus group transcripts
  • Remain fully informed on market trends, other parties researches and implement best practices

Qualifications for Market Research

  • 5+ years experience in marketing or related field
  • Excellent knowledge of statistical packages (SPSS, SAS or similar), databases and MS Office
  • Posses search engines, web analytics, and business research tools acumen
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Working knowledge with CRM programs
  • Adequate knowledge of data collection methods (polls, focus groups, surveys etc)
  • Advise clients or senior management on the best ways to use provided data
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking
  • Deep knowledge of data warehousing, and mining
