Pros
I'm going on my fifth year with RS Hughes and fourth year as the inside manager of one of our Texas branches. I started selling copiers straight out of college and after 3 years I lucked into the opportunity at RS Hughes. The main draw was the average tenure of 15+ years; mainly because in today's business world that is unfathomable. I actually took a pay cut to join RS Hughes but I was hired as a manager trainee so I thought it was worth the risk to see where it takes me. Almost 5 years later I'm glad I made the switch and can easily see myself here until retirement. A typical day at RS Hughes is enjoyably hectic. You wear every hat from taking care of customers via service or selling innovative products while managing the inventory to stay ahead of demand. We handle every facet of running a business and everyone is cross-trained so they gain those critical skills. The best part about the job is the satisfaction of winning new business and developing relationships with current and prospective customers. This is ultimately a sales oriented industry when it's all said and done. My benefits and time off are envied by my wife. I've worked for a large corporation (Ricoh) and thought the benefits were great. The benefits RS Hughes offers blows those out of the water. In just 4 years I've accrued more time off than I would ever want to use. Competitive salary--RS Hughes values long term employees. First year pay is competitive(not the best/not the worst) but increases over tenure. Health insurance is ridiculously good. I spent less than $500 out of pocket in medical expenses for the birth of my child from the first appointment to walking out the hospital with an new addition to the family . Standard 401K with great choices along with a employee stock option. RS Hughes is growing. Job Security - In over 50 years RS Hughes has never laid off employees.
Cons
I come from a competitive background and if you strike out in baseball or fumble the ball in football it's rather difficult to pass the buck onto someone else. RS Hughes has that feel. If you make a mistake it's rather difficult to blame others. I feel these negative reviews come from people with a sense of entitlement who failed at their jobs and are trying to protect their ego by passing the blame to others. RS Hughes is not meant for everyone. If you need to be micromanaged and told what to do constantly; you may not be happy here. If you're a slow learner and don't learn from mistakes; you may have a rough experience. If you aren't willing to work smarter AND harder than your competition, you're better off elsewhere.
