Description Rain or shine, the National Weather Service (NWS) knows. The NWS produces climate, hydrologic, and weather forecasts and warnings for the US. Its mission also includes forecasting to protect life and property and enhance the national economy. US government agencies and private groups as well as international organizations use NWS products. The agency has regional offices and specialized data gathering and forecast centers throughout the country. In 1870 President Ulysses S. Grant authorized the creation of the Division of Telegrams and Reports for the Benefit of Commerce, the forefather of the NWS. The NWS is now part of the Department of Commerce's National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
