Pros
I had never heard of Backblaze when I was recruited to work here, but it's easily the best place I have worked in my career this far. Backblaze hires smart people, pays them well, provides awesome benefits, conducts meaningful and creative team-building activities, and continually engages with employees to ensure they are satisfied. They have low turnover because employees are overall incredibly happy here. It's amazing how many companies can't figure out this very simple formula.
There are no slackers here. Everyone is great at their job but not arrogant about it. Employees are given latitude to be both strategic and tactical and make decisions without micromanagement. Senior leadership is highly approachable, transparent, and involved. There's a strong emphasis on company culture and diversity. Many people at the company are remote, but Backblaze has figured out remote collaboration so no challenges there.
Cons
It's a rapidly growing company and it can be hard to keep track of who's who. Better processes are sorely needed or processes are constantly shifting because of new team members coming on board. There is really no onboarding program other than "Go schedule meet and greets with these 20 different people." No training in company tools like Slack and GSuite and Jira. You have to be willing to dig in and figure a lot of things out on your own. For a small company, work can take a VERY long time to get done. Some teams are fast and reliable to work with. But sometimes work that has to go through other teams can sit and sit and sit with no explanation as to why it's not moving forward.
