Pros

CEO was hands off. Liked to stay in office. Former owners were the key to the culture. Once company was sold off to investors the Berkley Emeryville mentality was lost. The beauty of a BigFix was selling the culture and purity of honest caring about the endpoint security needs of our clients. Working hands on with Big Pharma, Government/large end user needs help expand BigFix into growth. BigFix cared about its clientele. Sales teams always delivered what customers needed. Once bought by IBM all was lost. Marketing VPs were crap. Sales never had a true leader. The product was the true PRO!

Pros

Truly superior technology. Made competitors look laughably incompetent. Management said they valued out-of-the-box thinking and actually meant it.

Cons

Growth brought talent dilution and complex politics. Kissinger's law ("Academic politics is so vicious because there is so little at stake.") kicked in. CEO couldn't hire a sales VP to save his life. Company bought by IBM mostly to kill it. Emeryville has its charms, but logistical accessibility (i.e. decent BART connection) isn't one of them.

Pros

Brightest group of technical people I have ever worked with. Tight knit group. Ability to challenge the status quo.

Cons

The IBM acquisition was great in many ways, but some of the key talent left following the acquisition.
