Strong Team building, lots of ways to get involved, world leading projects, constant work and advancement, good environment and office space, lots of work benefits such as education, lots of lectures to go to/education going on, bonus salary for shift workers

High turnover, Engineers go unrecognized for work in critical projects, lack of recognition, very limited education resources compared to other companies (oddly enough), raises are unfair (you need to seriously vouch for yourself)

International, work life balance depending on the position is generally good depending on your manager.

This place is essentially a public sector establishment disguised as a company. It is immediately evident that employees behave as if they work in the public sector: no sense of urgency, not even for critical projects. They are far from being considered a proper company within the semicon industry, while they don't even function as a proper academic establishment - research is anything but cutting edge. Old and unavailable tools, poor contam protocols, you end up spending your time teaching people proper industry WoW. Their PR is clearly top-notch, having convinced all big players to have a small team on campus, however reality hits you hard from day 1 if you work there. Things just don't move. I'm not even delving into the huge mess the FAB team is. Horrible. Salary and benefits are ~30% lower than the industry standard. Company car policy is a joke and kicks in above Team Leader level (industry partners give full leases to above-junior engineers). Very political place with limited growth opportunities unless you know the right people. Promotions are not decided on merit at all. If you value your career, be it academic or industry, steer clear of this place. Better work for either a reputable company or a good Uni.

Leading research organization so the topics are interesting and there are many interesting and motivated people. Very multi-cultural workforce and good team spirit. Internal mobility is encouraged. Generally good work-life balance.

Very flat career path - very limited promotional prospects and small payrises. Low alignment between departments, which causes a lot of stress. Male dominated leadership with lack of diversity in senior roles and no serious intention to change.

Overall, life here is pretty good. The level of pressure you feel mostly depends on your daily supervisor. People are generally friendly, and Leuven is a quiet, small, and charming city with many historic buildings.

As much as I enjoy research, I've found it challenging to engage in scientific discussions here. In my team, work-related conversations during lunch are rare, and most colleagues leave the office relatively early, around 16:30 - 17:30. Many prioritize work-life balance over research pursuits. Imec's reputation as a top semiconductor research center isn't solely due to individual talent but also its business model. Without direct competition, success is almost guaranteed. However, if your research focuses on industry-preferred topics or cutting-edge semiconductor devices, imec may be the ideal environment. Academic value often takes a backseat, and without industry interest, research efforts may go unnoticed. Yet, recognition from industry partners can elevate your profile as a researcher. On another note, forming connections with local Belgians has proven challenging due to perceived closed-mindedness.
