Pros
Flexible WFH, nice pay. Thats about it to be fairly honest.
Cons
Do not move here!
A lot of the people in the area are really prejudiced, don't be fooled. There are some amazing people there, but you might have to deal with microaggressions way too often depending on the group you are in.
You are way better off living in ABQ than Los Alamos or Santa Fe. There's nothing to do, outside of some nerd meetups and the outdoors. Pretty much everything here is lacking (service, medical, dental, restaurants, etc) but you will pay close to California prices for things other than gas, and food. Don't get hurt or sick, you might as well move to ABQ if that happens.
There's very little incentive to stay after a year or two.
There is very little (read this as a no) diversity.
Everyone seems to think that all Black folks here are a diversity hire- even if you went to Harvard/MIT/Berkeley and they went to some no name university in New Mexico/North Dakota/Montana, etc. The amount of people who went to C or D list schools at the lab is common. If you fit into this mold, this place is beneath you. Look somewhere else.
If you like all the stares, no representation, and bottom of the barrel amenities by all means work here. If you are an intern, get the experience but don't stay. The only way this lab run is by blindsiding young college students and getting them in seats before they know there are better jobs and organizations out there. By the time they figure it out, they are stuck in New Mexico.
