What is the hiring process like at Sally Beauty?

You get discounts and there’s always sales going on with in the company. If you’re in cosmetology school you get to learn a lot as you go. The hiring process was easy it took a couple of days to get hired.

management is terrible, they only view you as numbers and only care about you ‘building the basket’ no matter how hard you try to they want your numbers up. everything is so expensive in this store anymore and every customer complains about it so it’s impossible for everyone to buy more than 2-3 items per transaction. but they reprimand you if you don’t force everyone to get more than 4 items. upper management only hires managers from within the company because they’re desperate and cheap, doesn’t matter if that person is truly fit for the job or not. more likely than not they aren’t a good fit and are a terrible manager to their team. the pay sucks for what they expect you to do. if you aren’t constantly working on Something every minute you’re clocked in, they’re upset at you. managers don’t listen to any complaints or concerns we have ever. the hours given to employees isn’t enough. i’ve been a full time employee for a long time and don’t get over 32hrs most weeks while the rest of my coworkers get under 20 each while manager is looking at hiring more people. how is anybody supposed to get hours if you keep adding more people and cutting the stores total hours constantly?

You learn a lot of skills because they make you do multiple people’s jobs. Product is really fun and interesting to work on.

The review system is rigged to only give “meets expectations” to nearly every employee. This is consistently used as an excuse to not give raises or internal promotions. I found out that many new employees in the same position were making much more than me despite my years of experience that had me training even new managers in positions above me.

-easy work -cool customers -decent pay compared to what you're expected to do -nice coworkers -talk about your interests in hair on a daily basis (if you're interested in it, which you really should be at this job because you need to know ALOT and plus some)

corporate hired someone who had zero retail experience as our new store manager and boy howdy does it show. they are very hard on us about the smallest things and demand we respect them despite not showing the same to us. oh also if you aren't neurotypical or even just a carbon copy of them they will take out their aggressions on you.

The recruiting process was efficient; expectations on timing and interviews were met as planned. I was interviewing with 3 other publicly traded, large companies and Sally was the first one to provide me with an outstanding offer, which I did not hesitate to take. In fact, I started my interviews with 2 of the 3 companies earlier than Sally. Hats off to the recruiter / HR team! Onboarding has been amazing. Such a night and day difference than my last company. The people here genuinely care that you start off on a good foot from company introduction, setting up your equipment on the day you get hired, introductions to the team, etc. My first 30 days have been amazing. The corp office is awesome too. They've got a great cafe and each floor has commercial grade coffee machines (free), a Nespresso machine (free), and snack/vending machines (pay). Facilities are clean, my desk space is more than adequate, etc, etc. The company is truly diverse and respects people of all walks of life. As long as you dress appropriately, they are cool with whatever style of dress you choose. Also, I work 2 days in the office, the rest WFH. That's a great balance and good work arrangement for me.

So far, nothing worth noting.

Employees get free items (hair dye or other products) every month, the dress code was relatively lax, and you can meet some interesting people. It was very gratifying to help people fix their hair mishaps, some customers were incredibly thankful. It was nice to be able to help someone feel better about their appearance, and to know you made a difference in their life, and made them happy and more confident.

You do get thrown into some complicated customer problems early on, with little training. People ask advice on somewhat dangerous chemicals (perms, bleach, developer etc.), and if the manager or another very knowledgeable employee isn't there, you cannot help them. It's both frustrating for the employees and the customer. The staffing in this instance was very small, usually 2-3 people to a store maximum, so this problem was run into frequently. If somebody quits (manager especially), things go a bit crazy, it's a scramble. Not sure if this staffing issue is prevalent in other stores as well. Many times I was the only person present in the store, which causes a whole host of other problems. But I think it would be a great place to work if those issues were handled. The training was through an app on an iPad, to be done whenever the store was empty.
