What is the company culture like at SmithRx?

This may be the first time in my career I've worked somewhere that had an actual legitimate mission, that is genuinely making a positive impact on society. The 'Big Health' PBMs are a key contributor to the US's outrageous drug prices. SmithRx and similar transparent passthrough PBMs are actively changing the market to address that problem.

Like any small hungry company we're a bit under-resourced and our infrastructure and tooling to support the major customer facing teams are under-developed. From a tools perspective the teams are a little early in their ability to leverage technology to make their jobs more efficient. The 'company culture' from a people perspective is nascent and underdeveloped and doesn't have a clear owner.

The mission of the company is excellent. It's very rare to work for a company with such a clear and direct line from it's work & stated mission to the actual results of making the world a better place for it's customers. Combatting the broken US healthcare system one prescription at a time, and seeing those benefits directly impact real people. The CEO, SVP of Product Strategy (Pharma), VP of Marketing, SVP of Sales, SVP of Revenue, and SVP of Customer Success are excellent and skilled at the roles, leading the company in a good direction.

The software engineering and product teams are currently facing challenges due to inconsistent leadership. This has resulted in a lack of clear direction and support, hindering the team's ability to reach its full potential despite the presence of talented individuals at all levels. A significant concern across the company is the negative impact of the HR department. The current leadership within HR fosters a culture that is perceived by many employees as unsupportive, disrespectful, aggressively hierarchical and lacking empathy. This has created a climate of fear and apprehension among employees, hindering open communication and genuine employee engagement. The company would greatly benefit from a more employee-centric approach, where the HR department actively seeks and values employee feedback. This would not only improve employee morale and retention but also provide valuable insights for improving company culture and operations.

I actually learned a lot during my time at Smith. I was able to get exposure to new technologies and kind of general corporate culture that I didn’t have in my previous roles. The people I worked with were very smart and nice for the most part.

From the get go - telling me that having my cat in view of the camera during a meeting is distracting to being an overall nightmare when it came to planning and follow through for FMLA leave an benefits… I just had an icky and unpleasant experience dealing with them. Seconded to all the items in another review “systematically toxic” by an anonymous engineer. Management in general is very focused on not only meeting arbitrary deadlines but assigning responsibility to subordinates and then assigning blame to those subordinates when something goes wrong. So the culture is basically rushing to meet a deadline that is unclear why it’s set - often running into systemic obstacles outside of your control - trying to meet deadline anyway because of the culture - and then getting blamed (often publicly ) when it fails. The benefits. Vacation: Technically there is unlimited PTO but I found that in my tenure I took very little vacation because of pressure for deadlines and frankly lack of management taking any time off. People were online allll the time. At night, on weekends, while in the hospital after their wife gave birth… you name it. So- you can imagine feeling unable to log off also. No 401k match

Fun culture really but I really think they could do better with PTO or etc.
