      CX Developer Interview

      27 Jul 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at 85SIXTY in Jun 2023

      Interview

Normal initial zoom interview conversation that touched on background and qualifications. I found the interviewer to be personable and transparent. Experience w/r/t Javascript DOM manipulation was specifically questioned. This was followed by a "coding challenge" where you are given 2 30 minute vanilla JS code problems to solve. You are recorded in snapshots via webcam and cannot look anything up. The questions felt like CS homework and had absolutely no relevance to performing as a Frontend Developer, a job where you mostly look things up. No CSS, no HTML, and no JS DOM manipulation. I've done this for over 5 years and have been given 30 minutes to solve a math problem with code solely off the top of my head exactly zero times. Not sure what Frontend skills/experience this is meant to test beyond being good at taking tests. Overall, I found this to be an ableist practice that punishes anyone who hasn't memorized their homework from college and arbitrarily eliminates viable candidates. I was then totally ghosted following submission of the test.

Thank you for your feedback on the interview experience with 85SIXTY. We value your input as it helps us to continually improve. We're sorry to hear you were unhappy with the skills test format. Our goal was an objective analysis of skills using an independent third-party resource. The test measured technical abilities and the candidate's approach to solving complex problems. We understand tests like these are never perfect, which is why it was only one part of the overall evaluation, and other factors also determined a candidate's progression to later rounds of the interview process. With regard to feeling ghosted, candidates were told that if invited to the next round, they'd hear from us by a specific date. Those not selected would not receive further communication until after the role was filled, at which point rejection notices were sent to all candidates. We apologize if there were any miscommunications regarding these expectations. We will take your feedback into consideration during our internal review process. If you have any additional suggestions for how we might improve the interview process in the future, please reach out to us at HR@85sixty.com. Thank you again for your feedback, and we wish you the best of luck in your job search.
