I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Acrisure (Portland, OR) in Jun 2022
Interview
Contacted through Hired.com by a recruiter employed by Hired and servicing a contract for Acrisure. I had a phone screen that was called in ten minutes late wherein the recruiter set out to ascertain my experience with Java and with Kotlin. I detailed my understanding of Java, and of Kotlin (specifically running on the JVM), as well as my in-depth experience with the JVM over the past six to ten years. The recruiter did not appear to have an understanding of the relationship between Kotlin and Java, nor an understanding of the relationship between Kotlin, Java, and Android. The recruiter declined to continue with the interview process because they thought that I did not have sufficient experience with Java, a decision that confused me given that I had sufficient experience with Java tooling, the standard library, and concepts for the position's hiring manager to make such a decision, rather than the recruiter.
It may have very well been the case that the position required specific experience within the Java ecosystem that I did not have, but no effort was made by the recruiter to ascertain any such experience beyond basic exposure to the Java and Kotlin languages and tooling.
