      Quality Engineer Interview

      19 Mar 2013
      Anonymous employee
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Alarm.com in Dec 2012

      Interview

I applied online through our school's career website. Two current engineers from Alarm.com came and met with me at school. I believe they were both Device Engineers, but had a solid understanding of questions to ask for a Quality Engineer position. At the time, I was unsure if I wanted to apply for Device or Quality- which they were fine with and allowed me to interview for both at the same time. The next interview step was to go into the company's headquarters in McLean, VA. It is a nice area (also right next to Dunkin Donuts which was an added bonus). The interview was from 9:30-3 and I believe I spoke with a total of 5-6 people. It was a very full day but each interviewer was laid-back and I was offered water by every single person- which may seem like a small gesture, but it meant a lot. In the middle of the day, myself and the other two students interviewing ate a catered lunch in the conference room with a few of the employees. It was a relaxing lunch and the employees were easy to talk to and open to any questions. After lunch we continued the interviews and met with who we would be reporting to if given the job. A few weeks later I received a phone call stating that they were making me an offer; about a week after that I had a written offer emailed to me and a little less than one week to accept it.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

For the Device Engineer Interview I was handed a panel and they would ask me what certain parts were-pretty standard questions. I was also asked about black/white box testing. For the Quality Interview, I was asked basic SQL questions (I think they just wanted to get a basis for my understanding of it). I was also given a few riddles. At the company interviews, I was asked more questions about myself, SQL and also given a drawing of a standard home security panel and I was told to describe as best I could how I thought it worked. In addition, I was also given a simple program and was asked how I would approach it as a testing engineer- I think they mostly just wanted to see thought process on this question but there were also certain points you needed to hit. The riddle I was given was the Two Egg Problem- I posted a link for the answer below.

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Alarm.com (Tysons Corner, VA) in May 2026

      Interview

Began with a very inviting phone screener. Quick response to schedule a 30 minute MS Teams interview that consisted of a mix of background information and exercises like "how would you test a pencil". Quick response again to schedule a 3.5 hour in-person interview gauntlet where I met with 4 people that gave assessments which were centered around running tests, ranking the priority of bugs, and the software development cycle. Overall good experience, but I was a bit caught off guard by the number of assessments during the final in person interview. I expected at least a 30 minute tour sprinkled somewhere in a 3.5 hour visit.
