      Director Operational Tax Interview

      9 Jul 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Woburn, MA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at American Tower (Woburn, MA) in Jun 2021

      Interview

I had a very disappointing and frustrating experience interviewing with American Tower for a Director of Operational Tax role. It’s a great company, and I really wanted to work there, but I really feel as though they did me dirty in the end. My initial interview was with HR on a Zoom call - that interview went well, no complaints whatsoever. After a few days, I was scheduled for an interview with the hiring manager, who is the VP of Finance and Operations. I prepared for that interview, and when it actually happened, The hiring manager told me that this was going to be an informal interview, more like a “getting to know one another” type of conversation, and that the more formal interviews would come in the ensuing round / rounds. I am not sure how this interview was informal, because he spent the entire interview telling me about the company and the position, and asking me to describe my background and discuss my prior work experiences. When the interview ended, The hiring manager told me that someone would be in touch within a couple of days to schedule the next round, which would be a series of panel-style interviews with other company stakeholders in Accounting, Finance, etc. Well, I never heard back from the hiring manager nor from anyone else in HR. After a couple of weeks, the recruiter with whom I was working (who referred me to this job opportunity) told me that the feedback that she received was that they liked me a lot, but they were slightly concerned about my not having any managerial experience. This was news to me, because not only do I have many years of managing people and processes, but I spoke to my experience during both sets of interviews. So, I am really not sure how this misunderstanding or disconnect occurred. I tried to rectify the situation by emailing the hiring manager and clarifying my managerial experience, but never heard back from him. They ultimately ghosted me for another 3 weeks or so, and then let my recruiter know that they were no longer interested in my candidacy. So, I never got the panel style interview(s) that I was promised, and they also messed-up or mixed me up with another candidate, and claimed that I had no managerial experience. I am trying not to have any residual bad feelings - it’s not the first time that I did not receive a job offer - however, the way that this all played out left an awful taste in my mouth. For all of the effort, and time taken off of work for the interviews, it was not worth it because the company left me with a distinct impression of being very disorganized and disingenuous.
