Was contacted by the HR a week after applying wanting to bring me in for an in-person.
I went in to the meeting and shortly into our conversation she tells me I am scheduled to meet with the hiring manager in 30 minutes. I was surprised and a bit confused because her and I had not discussed additional meetings, however I went along with it.
My meeting with HR was great! Things started to turn when she mentioned that certain skills and experience caught the hiring manager's interest. She went on to admit that there were two roles open -- one in allocations and one in planning -- so I kind of had an idea where this was going.
The meeting with the hiring manager went smoothly enough. She focused on the allocation role and how my background can really benefit the company, even though I never applied for it and was in their office for the Retail Planner role. In the end I asked about the planner role but was basically told I don't have the experience they are looking for. I was very annoyed because of the bait and switch and because of the waste of time for a role I was 1. not interested in 2. didn't apply for 3. they don't have visible on LinkedIn.
What surprised me even more is that the next day HR emails me to ask about availability to meet the other allocator as if I was interested in their allocation role. I guess the hiring manager didn't speak to HR or maybe was under the wrong impression about my interests despite being very clear about my next moves, therefore I let HR know where my next steps are.
Lesson: get on the phone first to make sure everyone is on the same page.
