      Filmmaker Interview

      9 Aug 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Asana

      Interview

After I applied online, I was asked for specific video samples by a recruiter then invited for a phone screening the next week. Over the phone, the recruiter made me feel relaxed and spoke to me like a person and an equal. They immediately advanced me to a phone interview with the hiring manager the following week. This phone interview was a stark contrast to the previous one. From the very beginning, the hiring manager seemed to have no interest in speaking with me. Most of their questions were pretty general production questions but with little to no follow up or additional questions on my responses. By their demeanor, I couldn't help but feel minimized. If I talked about my experience managing productions, they wanted to hear more about my experience as a jack-of-all trades videographer but then seemed unimpressed by the scale of budgets and crew I managed. By the end, I felt like they were more interested in proving I wasn’t a good fit rather than being interested in how I could be. As another candidate suggested, it seems they are lacking clear direction and appropriate expectations for the position. I will commend my experience with the recruiter and Asana in general for being very communicative and quick with decisions. My suggestions, please don’t interview candidates you’re not excited about. Also, instead of hoping to get a pie-in-the-sky candidate, look for those who have what you need right now and posses the potential to grow into everything you want.
