      BES Fellowship Interview

      27 Jun 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at BES

      Interview

Met with a member of the recruitment team online. The descriptors for the fellowship are obscure and misleading. The $100,000 salary is two years instead of four as advertised. Also, the rolling application process is seasonal instead of annual. I submitted my application based on this premise of rolling acceptance (5 hours to complete) and was advised to reapply during the next cycle. Moreover, the benefits package should be carefully examined. Long-term fellows are not employees given the number of hours worked, health care and 401k pensions are not offered. The selection process per region is unclear, there are 2 fellows per region. I suggest more transparency regarding expectations. Given the time and labor investment including 5 interview rounds, don't exploit fellows and be upfront about the bottom line. BES seems to be a relic of the past with a fresh pipeline of employees but the innovation and diversity is questionable.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at BES (New York, NY) in Nov 2018

      Interview

I began the process in early August, due to an email I received from BES asking me to apply. Within a few days, I went through two rounds of interviews and a call with the Founder. After a pretty engaging conversation with the founder; I never heard back from BES. Against my better judgement, and due to my desire to enact change.. I reapplied. After submitting an application, I was told that BES would no longer offer fellowships in NYC, and that I should choose a different region. I selected the Bay Area, and submitted my paper application. Two days later, I was invited to complete a video interview, and then was invited to a call with the Director of Recruitment. Once I got on the call, the Director inquired about my interest in a 4-week internship program to learn more about BES. These people clearly don't look at resumes, as I worked at a BES school for a few years. I would not recommend going through this process. For an organization who claims to drive educational change through an investment in leaders...they fall short on getting to know qualified applicants.
