After applying, if you get to the first stage, you undertake an online English test and online Maths test. Then you get invited to a 2-day assessment day. The first day you are just given a presentation and shown around the dockyard - it is pretty interesting. You are also given your tasks for the following day. The tasks were: a team building exercise, an interview and a presentation. The team building exercise was pretty tricky and as you would imagine, was a lot of everyone shouting to be heard. The interview was with a current graduate there and a manager, and was about 45 minutes long. They were really friendly and the questions weren't too difficult. Finally, the presentation was on 2 new business ideas you have for Babcock. It turned out that both of my ideas - they do similar things already (though I'd found nothing of this online).
My feedback was that I spoke too much about university during my interview, and my presentation ideas were not relevant to Babcock. I found this really confusing as I only mentioned university once in passing as I had graduated about 4 years previous and it wasn't particularly relevant! And my ideas - well they do them already so they are relevant...I expected 'lack of research' to be the feedback, not that they weren't relevant?! I questioned the feedback to see if they had inadvertently given me somebody else's, but they said it was definitely mine. They also said my performance in the team exercise was poor (which I 100% agree with... I am not good at trying to shout over other people).
Another girl at the assessment day, who DID in the end get the job, was kept waiting for about 4 months before she got told whether she had the job or not (they may have had her on hold while seeing if there was anybody better in later assessment days), which I thought was really bad.
All in all it was a very interesting experience though and very valuable (I didn't ever get my expenses reimbursed though!!!)
