Difficult interview
Application
I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at BetterUp in Oct 2020
Interview
There were several rounds in the interview process so I got to meet lots of people (within my team and cross-functional). The process was well organized and everyone was very responsive. It was rigorous and tough, especially towards the end, but rewarding and a good preview of the work.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Interview questions spanned technical and content-related skills, my values (and how they fit with BetterUp), and how I'd fit in the environment (dealing with fast-paced, ambiguity, rapid change). The work sample was in-depth.
Going in with a great deal of respect for BetterUp, I was referred internally and expected to endure a long recruiting process with several stages including interviews and a case study. After all, anything worthwhile is worth working hard for.
What I didn't expect was to wait weeks between interviews requiring me to check in with a number of different recruiters and the hiring manager before receiving next steps. The first two interviews went well. I received the case study that required several days of work to complete. I submitted this both online and directly to the hiring manager as requested and have since been ghosted. Recently, I've learned other highly qualified PhD level applicants with highly relevant professional backgrounds have had similar experiences. In what is certainly a "small world" field (the same field that underpins BetterUp's research and service offerings), I worry that BetterUp's reputation will deteriorate over time if this is how they continue to treat applicants.
