I was looking for part time work as a non-cdl driver. I found Bin There Dump That Dumpster Rental Austin and applied online. The hiring person responded the same day with some follow up questions as well as a much more detailed job snapshot. The job snapshot described the typical day, compensation, desired qualities, and "this may be the right job for you if..." and "not the right job for you if..." statements.
I replied immediately because it seemed like a good fit. Then the next day I got a call from someone on the leadership team. I had a phone interview which was pretty easy since we seemed to get along well. The interviewer was upfront about the hard parts of the dumpster rental delivery driver job, but it didn't scare me. Then the next step in the process was explained, and we set up a time for me to meet for a face-to-face interview at their HQ in the Frost Bank Tower downtown.
The building was easy to find, of course, the building is an Austin icon, but parking in the garage was a little confusing. Be sure to get there early. Once parked, I headed up to the 15th floor, was greeted by the receptionist, and was taken down the hall to a meeting room. I met with two people who conducted a tandem interview. One was taking notes while the other was asking questions.
The questions were more so about being a good fit for the culture, going above and beyond, delivering great customer service, etc.
This interview went well, they explained the next step was to ride in the truck for a day and experience the job to make sure we all felt like it was a good fit. So we scheduled that day.
When riding in the truck I got to use the truck's lift to pick up, move, dump dumpsters while in the bin yard. However, I did not get to drive because I wasn't on the insurance. Everything seemed pretty doable and I liked the driver.
The driver shared the inside scoop with me on the dumpster rental company, and industry. I liked what I heard, and didn't mind the "cons" of the job.
After all that, I met with the hiring manager again, and he offered me the job, saying that I had gotten approved by every person who interviewed me. They are very thorough with their hiring process so they can screen out people who aren't the right culture fit or won't stick around for years to come. It's the right thing to do, they are protecting their existing team and clients who love them.
Next was a two week paid training process that I had to pass before I was completely official. The training was hands on, and they have a Driver's Training Manual that goes over everything from safety, to what to do for every step of the job, how to handle problems, etc. Very thorough.
I went through the training process pretty easy. There were a few things that took me a while to learn, but most of it was natural feeling. I'm very happy to be working with this A-player team, great culture.
