      Lab Assistant Interview

      21 Jan 2015
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Fremont, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at BioGenex (Fremont, CA)

      Interview

I initially had a very rushed and unexpected phone interview from one of the scientists asking me about my background and my knowledge of the company and its products/services. He was kind of brusque on the phone, but he eventually scheduled me for an on site interview later on in the week. I was interviewed by a panel of 3 people (including the person who conducted the phone interview) and they proceeded to ask me about my background and then quizzed me about the steps of certain experiments that I had performed in the past. They then asked me if I had any experience performing tissue embedding and staining and seemed very shocked and even scoffed at me (and became progressively more rude) when I told them that I did not, even though it is clearly not listed on my resume, and I even stated in my cover letter that I did not have experience with it but was eager to learn. They also asked me if I could work overtime and occasionally on the weekends if I got the position. Honestly, they were all quite rude and just seemed very condescending. At the end of the interview, they asked if I knew where the exit was and then basically dismissed me while they all stayed behind in the meeting room. I eventually got a call back to come in for a second interview, but I declined because the environment of the office and the attitudes of the interviewers were so terrible. I honestly think that I would have been miserable working there, especially considering that the interviewers did not look very happy themselves.

I'm saddened to hear that you had a negative experience in the past interviewing with us. In our hiring efforts we often times do move quickly to schedule phone interviews with candidates that we are interested in, however, we have changed some steps in our approach and process since your time interviewing with us. As of now, my position is responsible for scheduling the phone screens/interviews with all candidates and we always set up a specific date and time with you via email so you know when we will be calling you. I agree that it was not polite or professional for those involved to have scoffed at you and I apologize on behalf of the company that you experienced that. The group that we currently have working in our labs (and those that would be involved in panel interviews) are all very friendly, supportive, collaborative, and understanding individuals.
