      Product Strategy Manager Interview

      6 Sept 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Woodland Hills, CA
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at BlackLine (Woodland Hills, CA) in Aug 2018

      Interview

Mostly a quick and efficient process. I applied to Blackline through an employee referral and heard back within 1 day. First Round: 30 minute HR Screener. Recruiter walked through what the hiring manager was looking for, asked a few general questions about my background and why I was interested in the role/Blackline, and then described the next steps in the process. Second Round: 1 hour Call with hiring manager. This call with the hiring manager was about 50% behavioral and 50% case. The behavioral focused on questions about my past experience and times I had analyzed data or led projects in the past. The case was more of a high level discussion talking through a current business problem they are working towards. Come prepared with questions because there was ample time (15+ minutes) left for questions at the end. Final Round: In person at Blackline's office. I was at the office for 4.5 hours. First 30 minutes is a tour of the office with the recruiter who walks you through Blackline's history. Fit is important at the company so paying attention here can help during the rest of the interview. Next was a 1 hour interview with the hiring manager. This involved 30 more minutes of behavioral about my past experience again focused on my data analysis and project lead abilities. The next 30 minutes involved continuing to discuss through the business problem with white boarding of how I would approach a data analysis problem involved. The next hour was with the Director of Product. Same format, but the behavioral was more of a discussion and I was asked more "soft" questions like "what does empathy mean to you?" and "tell me about your proudest moment." The recruiter tells you to make sure you don't talk too long in your answers and to throw the question back at the interviewer. I thought this was weird, but it was true. The other 30 minutes was spent discussing a case about a product feature and the options available moving forward. The last hour was with the Chief Product Officer. This interviewer was very direct and all behavioral. You have ample time to ask questions and he's really looking to see if you're a good fit for the role so ask questions about the good and bad parts of the company and team. Don't just use rehearsed answers for "why do you want this position" as well because he will push back. After the 3 chats, I debriefed with HR and went home. Shortly after they asked for a sample data analysis spreadsheet I had done for a past job or school. I sent over a sample, but found out a week later that I was not selected for the job. Despite this, the process with Blackline was a breeze. The recruiter was responsive and kept me up to date throughout the process. Their reason for not selecting me was fair I thought and while disappointed, I would interview at Blackline again.
