      Business Ops Role Interview

      7 Mar 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Boomtrain (San Francisco, CA) in Jan 2016

      Interview

The recruiter and CEO was fine on the phone but when I came to meet the management team, I was not only underwhelmed but majorly turned off. They were the biggest pack of bros ever. They wanted to talk about themselves, how successful they've been, and how they're building the next "unicorn." One guy mentioned several times, unprompted, that he went to Cornell. (It was like he was Andy Bernard from The Office.) When I tried to dive in on revenue growth, churn rates and sales strategy, they were first elusive and then offended that I kept pushing. They became dismissive altogether and acted like they were too good to answer these questions, and used intimidation tactics to shut me down. The impression I got was that this is a group of arrogant tech/frat bros who have no real track record of success. This is probably the most telling story of all. When I asked them how they came up with the company name, they said they were on a boat in Baja, drinking beer. They were trying to come up with billion-dollar startup ideas, and they had so many they almost couldn't choose. "Boom, that's a good one! Boom, that's another good one! Boom, another one! You better get on this BOOM TRAIN before it leaves the station!" Lol.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

They asked me to draw up a plan for the first 6 months, as well as list all of my vendors, and contact information for all tech entrepreneurs, investors, analysts and journalists I knew. They literally came in with a notepad and pen, handed it to me and asked me to start mapping things out as they watched. They were basically asking me to do the work for free.
