I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at ByteDance (Los Angeles, CA) in May 2019
Interview
I applied through LinkedIn and got contacted by the recruiting team in a few days. I had a phone interview with the recruiter, and then a video interview with the hiring manager based in China. Finally, I went to Bytedance's offices in Los Angeles and met with multiple people. Overall I got the sense they either didn't have a good idea of what this role was going to do in the overall context of the division it sits or they were very secretive about their strategy. Either way, that didn't create a good impression as the role seemed risky to whoever might end up taking in. Also, the culture at Bytedance seemed to be on the side of a break-neck pace with a lot of oversight from the HQ in China and some clashes between Chinese and Western cultures that are worth to consider.
After the interview, I reached out to the recruiting team twice to get some feedback (once a week after the interview, and then 2 weeks after). Neither of the 3 people in Bytedance HR team I had a contact with extended me the courtesy to reply.
From this process, I got the impression that Bytedance doesn't care much about the candidate experience and its people. The company focus mostly on the business. Growth and monetization above everything else.
