      Sales Consultant Interview

      18 Jul 2011
      Anonymous employee
      Accepted offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at CarMax in Jul 2011

      Interview

I applied for the business office associate position online, got a call back a few days later from the sales manager suggesting i apply as a sales consultant, so i did. He asked me some basic questions "why carmax" and "tell me about yourself". I was invited to a hotel which they rented out for their interviews, and i was told to bring a printout of a car you like (to sell) and 2 forms of ID (i brought license and Social security card). When you first get there, i had to fill out a paper version of the application, signing background, driving, and drug tests, and verifying everything is correct. Then i had to fill out an online questionnaire that basically consisted of 1 basic drug related question (do you do drugs) and wording it about 50 different ways, kinda a waste of time. once i finished, a person called my name, and i was brought into a room with the person who did my phone interview, and another guy, and had a standard interview, and was asked to sell the car i printed out. (ask them to testdrive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). after that i was asked back to the waiting room, where i waited for round 2 with 2 different people. pretty much the same questions (explain a time a customer was upset, and how did you handle it), then asked back to the waiting room. then the general manager (i think) brought me to the pool area, for the "final interview" (i already had the job), where he explained the pay, and about the company, where i signed the job offer (didn't sign a pay agreement though). then i did my drugtest, and met the rest of the team. my advice to you is, if you have to go to the bathroom, hold it in, because they drug test on the spot.

      Application

I interviewed at CarMax (Newark, DE)

      Interview

About a 15-20 minute phone interview. Basic questions like past job experience, are you comfortable with customer service? If they like you, you move on to an in person interview. A scripted interview with one of the sales managers asking open ended questions on why you would be a good candidate, if you have sales experience, & that you understand it is a 100% commission position. You will then complete a sales exercise on the lot, where you complete a brief walkaround of a vehicle & present some obvious features & benefits of the vehicle. If you get passed that, you meet the General Manager where he/she will be the final decision. He asked repetitive questions the sales managers did & then asked specific questions like "Describe a time you sold a product, what was the determining factor that resulted in the customer buying that product?"

      Interview

Easy-going and interviewee friendly. Looks to bring out opportunity for growth for the interviewee. Begins with a screening call by the manager, goes to an in-person interview with the manager where specific sales questions are asked, and then concludes with a final interview with the LGM to assess fit.
