      Localization Project Manager Interview

      I applied online. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Carly (Munich, Bavaria) in Sept 2022

      Interview

      The entire process took about 1.5 month after applying for the position. Shortly after I applied for the position, I was invited to the first interview. Here was the hiring process for my case: 1. First interview with a HR person (30 mins) 2. Second interview with Head of HR and CEO (30 mins) 3. Briefing session about the upcoming workshop with the same HR person from the first interview, Head of the corresponding Team and CEO (15 mins) 4. Workshop with two HR people, Head of Team and CEO (2 hrs) 5. Meet the Team with the corresponding team members and CEO (1 hr) 6. Contract Conversation with Head of HR and CEO (30 mins) Between 1 and 2, 2 and 3, it took only a week. For the workshop, I was given 2 weeks to prepare. A few days after the workshop I was invited to meet the entire team members, which was the final screening session. I expected at least a week for them to get back to me with their final decision but it took only a few days, and then I was invited to a video call to talk about contracts. Interviews/sessions happened almost once every week, so I can easily imagine it would be difficult to cope with this schedule if your current job demands your constant presence, or if your current company does not give you freedoms when it comes to working hours. Even so, 15-30 mins session per week may be doable but securing 2 hours for the workshop could be really difficult unless you take a half or full day off from the current job, which I am guessing may be used as an indicator for Carly to determine how much you want the job. Luckily, the company I was with at the time gave me lots of freedom to decide on my daily schedule and allowed flexible working hours, so it worked out for me and Carly. As long as you do not have any schedule conflicts, it is a very reassuring hiring process because you never get the feeling of being left hanging. I am usually nervous when it comes to any interviews, no matter how casual it is, but the first interview with a HR person was very pleasant. She knew exactly how to reassure me that the session was not just for them to get to know me but also for me to get to know what kind of company Carly was. She explained about the company from her personal point of view, unlike any typical HR talk so I felt instantly good about the company. The second interview was short, but absolutely on-point and they were punctual when it comes to interview duration which I appreciated. For this interview, I was not really interrogated but it was more like they explained in details about the company’s policy, why the company is like how it is now, and what drives the company forward. During the briefing, they explained how the workshop works, and what was the reason behind it. For the workshop, I had to come up with a 4-week localisation plan and present it. I was excited when they told me that this workshop was solely to see if my way of working and their way of working would be a good match, and that it was not to see if my presentation would be good or bad. They made sure I know that the presentation doesn’t need to be perfect nor beautiful, and that they didn’t want me to spend more than 8 hours or so. I am not a huge fan of long presentation myself, so that sounded music to my ears! 2 weeks was enough time for me to prepare it since it included two weekends. I prepared a 15-mins presentation, and kept the layout etc. fairly simple, focusing on being straight-forward. I thought the workshop session wouldn’t last 2 hours since my presentation was short but little did I know I was grilled like a BBQ (well-done) hamburger by CEO’s bullets of questions which lasted for full 1h45min, probably even longer. He asked so many questions about my presentation and how I would tackle certain work situations that no other people had any questions left to ask me. The grilling, fast-paced Q&A session with CEO was by far the most difficult part of the entire hiring process. You have to know exactly what you are talking about in order to clear all his insightful and sharp questions. You also need to be a quick thinker to come up with answers to match his speed. Looking back now it all made sense to me that Head of Team told me, during the briefing, how important it is to really be myself, not pretending to be someone else for the workshop. Up until workshop they don’t really go into details, asking all the experiences you have so you may feel that the whole interview process are fairly easy, however, if you are not true to what your C.V. brings, it would be easily revealed during the workshop and everyone there would see through what you have really done in your career.
