I had a similar interview experience with another person that posted here regarding their senior data scientist interview. The recruiter I spoke with was super nice, responsive and informative. They were definitely enthusiastic about the organization as well as the team, which got me excited to interview with CZI.
As a next step, I was initially scheduled to have a 45 min video call with the HM doing a "case study" but for some reason, that was switched over to a phone call. I found this experience to be a bit strange given that, with other companies and orgs I'm interviewing with, these types of interviews are done interactively through a web call with screenshare or video. Conversation with HM went fine but the feedback and responses from the HM were a bit abrupt at times, and it was very apparent that they were not too interested and unengaged in some of my responses.
I received a rejection email the morning after, which I expected based on the lack of enthusiasm and abruptness that I sensed during the conversation. I was not too disappointed in this rejection as I did not find the interview to be super engaging or memorable.
Thank you for sharing your experience interviewing at CZI. We are glad the recruiter you worked with was responsive and informative. It is disappointing that you did not have a similar experience in connecting with the Hiring Manager. While this opportunity may not have been the right fit, we do hope you keep us in mind in the future.
Application
I applied online. I interviewed at Chan Zuckerberg Initiative in Sept 2025
Interview
CZI uses Karat for their technical screening. I never had experience with Karat until interviewing with CZI and I honestly think it's awesome. Karat interviewers are objective and paid to interview you so you aren't made to feel like you're wasting their time. They're objective, patient, and follow the agenda as per instructed. Wish all companies would use Karat. It would make for a much better interviewee experience, regardless of the outcome. Kudos CZI and Karat.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
I actually don't know if I've been chosen to move forward based on the tech screen. They ask general ML questions and then ask you to code solution to problem (thank goodness they don't use one of the typical coding question platforms). They actually come up with their own questions (refreshing).
Thank you for taking the time to interview with CZI and for sharing your positive experience with our Karat technical screening process. We are committed to making our interview experience as objective and efficient as possible, and we are glad to hear that Karat helped achieve this for you. We also appreciate your feedback on our custom-designed interview questions. We wish you the best in your job search.
I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (Redwood City, CA) in Jan 2020
Interview
Phone interview with HR and a week later with the manager. On site interview was messy: the HR person forgot to share that i had to download files for my coding interview, which delayed my coding interview and I had no time to demonstrate my skills.

How would you prepare and analyze a research from start to finish?
We're sorry to hear of your experience, thank you for sharing. We take this feedback seriously and will strive to improve our processes as a result. We hope you will consider opportunities at CZI in the future.
