      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      11 Jun 2026
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Toronto, ON
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Clio (Toronto, ON) in Jun 2026

      Interview

Misleading compensation and interview tactics. The interview process had several rounds and was generally well organized. However, there were two things worth knowing before applying. First, during the interview, I was explicitly asked to choose between an SWE and an SRE role and was told this preference "would not affect the outcome." It did affect the outcome. Second, the job posting listed a salary range of $ 116k–$150k. In reality, compensation is fixed at approximately $125k for all new hires, regardless of experience. Their justification is that starting at a lower level gives you "room to grow without needing to change roles." In practice, this means you start $25k below the top of the posted range, with no flexibility for negotiation. This was framed as a pay equity policy, which sounds noble but, in practice, operates as a salary cap well below what the posting implies. For candidates targeting $150k, this is worth knowing before investing time in multiple rounds of interviews. The recruiters were communicative and transparent when pressed, which I appreciated. But the compensation structure and interview framing felt misleading upfront.

      Interview

Initial chat(s) with the recruiter. The recruiter was supportive and provided feedback after the interviews. 1 hour Programming Interview 1 hour System Design Interview 1 hour Technical Leadership 1 hour Culture Interview - I believe this is what I crashed. It was a bit weird to be honest. It sounded like they're looking for people that worship lawyers no matter what their intent is. I feel like it was a miscommunication where the interviewer could have framed the questions using better words.

Thank you for taking the time to share your interview experience with us. We’re so glad to hear that you felt well-supported by your recruiter and had a positive experience during the technical rounds. We also really appreciate your candid feedback regarding the culture interview. One of our core values is "Customer Success Comes First," and because we build software specifically to empower legal professionals, we place a lot of emphasis on how our team aligns with that mission. It sounds like that intent didn't translate clearly during your conversation, and we're sorry the framing felt off. Your feedback is incredibly valuable, and we'll use it to ensure we're communicating our mission more clearly to candidates in the future.
