I applied through a recruiter. The process took 8 weeks. I interviewed at Compass in Oct 2021
Interview
I was recruited through LinkedIn.
Interview Process
- Call with Recruiter: 30 minutes
- Head of Operations Interview: 1 hour
- Head of Operations Interview: 1 hour
- Head of Operations Interview: 1 hour
- Presentation to Panel, including Hiring Manager: 1 Hour
- President to the Region: 30 minutes
** Salary was not discussed until the 4th stage of the process at my prompting.
The interview process from start to finish took 6 weeks and involved a lot of back and forth via emails to schedule. The presentation by far was the most amount of effort. I was given a 3 step prompt with multiple questions to answer, as well as a requirement to plan strategically and create metric mockups. I had about 5 business days to prepare it and had to create a powerpoint in advance of the meeting for review.
I received enthusiastic feedback at every stage. At the end of the interview process, I didn't hear back for about a week. The recruiter came back and let me know that the team was reassessing the role and had decided to downgrade the title, but keep the responsibilities the same. This was both attributed to a strategic business decision and some concerns about my experience working with real estate agents (though at the beginning of my career I was a residential real estate agent and property manager). I was also told I was the only candidate they were considering. They offered me the role, but I had some questions and requests on compensation and asked those. The recruiter got back after another week had passed and let me know that the team had decided to downgrade the job title even further and I was now too experienced and priced out of the role.
On the whole, I enjoyed talking with the people I met along the way and could have seen myself working at the company. However, at the end of 8 weeks, having spent 5 hours in interviews and probably 4x that preparing for them, I was left with a lot of confusion and the feeling that my time had been wasted.
It seems that Compass is still struggling with their strategy for key hires for emerging markets. Along the way, I also learned that much of the reporting and metrics the company is using from an operations standpoint is lacking. For me, I think the end result worked out the best for my career path, but I hope this review helps others considering this role for their next step.

Question 1
A few questions involved talking about the Compass Entrepreneurial Principles, which ones spoke to me, examples of times I had used the principles in action in the past.
