      Application

I applied through university. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at DREAM (New York, NY) in May 2011

      Interview

I applied online and was contacted soon after for an impromptu phone interview. The interview was short and informal, albeit unexpected, and was followed by an email with instructions for an impending in office interview. For this interview, I had to come prepared with a lesson plan for Clubhouse time. It's pretty straightforward stuff and I had ample time to prepare. I received another phone call from a different supervisor making sure I was clear on the instructions for the in office interview. Everyone was very pleasant and helpful. The in office interview was a group interview that took a few hours. We all had to fill out a packet of questions about ourselves, our career goals, and our reason for applying for this position at this non-profit. Our group interview required us (the applicants) to freely discuss summer learning loss and the achievement gap while the supervisors observed and took notes. We also split up into groups and presented our lesson plans to the other applicants who pretended to be students. Finally we had one on one interviews that were just more of the same. The interview process is very thorough, but it's not particularly intimidating if this is something you're very passionate about. You definitely shouldn't apply if you're not earnestly passionate about Harlem RBI. It'll show and this job really doesn't pay a lot for you to do this if your heart isn't in it.
