      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Dahl's Foods (Des Moines, IA)

      Interview

As a teenager (8-9 years ago), I remember applying for the position of a courtesy clerk because my entire family worked for the company except for my father. So because of my family name and reputation, that gave me more leverage over other applicants. Your best method of receiving employment is by first going online or in-person to complete the application. I would recommend going to the store you live closest by and asking for an application yourself so that you can give management an idea of your personality. It's always good to apply in-person than online because people need to associate names with faces! So before you go to the store to pick up your application, make sure you look good. This gives management the idea that you take yourself seriously and that you are willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done! Once you arrive to the store, locate the customer service counter first (it is generally to your left or your right as you walk in through the automatic sliding doors. After you have found the Customer Service counter, ask the lady or gentleman upfront if you can speak with a manager (it is always good for you to speak with a manager and introduce yourself by first and last name so that they can associate you with your application). Once you have completed the application that day, do not return it later the same day, instead wait until the next day to return it. If you return your application the same day of receiving it, then that gives the management the idea that A) you are an ingratiator or B) you jump to conclusions fast. The next day, remember to dress sharp once again, go to the Customer Service Counter and ask for a manager once again. Hopefully, it is the same manager and he/she remembers who you are. Shake their hand and say thank you for their time and consideration. By doing that you are giving yourself more brownie points with the management and they will most likely remember you when it comes time to schedule interviews. Wait for about a week before you give the store a call. If you wait a 2-3 after you have turned in the application to call the store, then that gives management the indication that you are very impatient. The last thing Dahl's needs is another impatient person to wait on. Once your week is up, then give the store a call or show up to the store once again dressed up and ask for the manager. Once the manager comes out (hopefully it is the same one again), then say to them "My name is [state your first and last name]. I turned an application in a week ago and I was wondering if you had time to look it over." By now, the manager will probably go back to their office and search for your name, if they have time. If you're lucky, the manager may schedule the interview right then and there (that is why I always recommend dressing sharp whenever you make an appearance at the store). If they do not have time, then they will simply reschedule an interview time. Now, you have come to the time you have been waiting for, the interview. If this is your first job, then do not expect the manager to ask you difficult questions because chances are you have no prior work experience to talk about The first question they may ask you is "tell me about yourself". Depending on it it is your first job or not, they honestly want to know about your work experience, not what you actually do in your spare time. They will also ask a bunch of generic questions such as "what makes you a better candidate for the job?", "what do you know about Dahl's?", and "why do you want to work for Dahl's?". Just be ready to give them honest, straightforward answers. Do not lie about any of your past experiences. If you were fired from previous employers and you were naive enough to put that on your application, then I would be prepared to tell them why you were fired and what you learned from that situation. Chances are, a company will not hire somebody who has been fired on multiple occasions. So if you find yourself in this situation, then be prepared to explained yourself. Take a negative and turn it into a positive. Do not make the same mistake twice. The interview is fairly easy (try not to embellish the truth). They ask very intuitive questions. And the one thing you need to keep in mind, other than giving honest answers is to have good body posture. Show that you care. Once you complete the interview, the manager will have you complete a hundred question test based on your morals. Be as honest and truthful as you can be. Once the interview is over, the rule of thumb is to send whoever interviewed you a thank you note within 24-48 hours of the interview. This will put you in great position once management comes toward the end of the hiring process. After you get the job, just remember to work hard, listen, and show people that you care! These attributes will take you a long way! Best of luck in your future endeavors with Dahl's Foods! :-)
