I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at ESS in Jan 2017
Interview
I applied for the job and heard back pretty quickly about a "group interview" (I think that's what they called it). I chose my date and time online and went to a school where the "interview" was held. It was really more of an orientation. There were I believe 3 employees there. They explained the basics of substitute teaching, how to look for job postings, how we get paid, all the orientation stuff. They gave us papers to get background checks and TB tests. They basically said once we got all the necessary paperwork in (obviously a clean background check and negative TB results) we would be able to start working. They did ask everyone to say a little bit about themselves like where they went to college, what they majored in and why they wanted to sub but that was basically it. It was a very long period of time for an "interview" it was more of an unpaid training day before you were officially hired. Its very easy to get hired by them, and you can actually be honest and say "I want to do this for the money" and they're like "okay cool!". So I enjoyed the low stress vibe of it all.
The interview process is done online. All paperwork needs to be uploaded. Once your references are complete and background check you have to wait for an acceptance email. Then you’re good to go.
