When you interview a candidate at Eskom, the whole process is designed to be fair, documented, and defensible under South African labour law, because every appointment can be challenged at the CCMA. As an HR intern you won’t chair the panel, but you’ll be deeply involved in support. It starts with shortlisting, where HR and the line manager screen CVs against the job spec and Employment Equity targets, and your job is to help compile spreadsheets, check that qualifications are legitimate, and make sure the pool is diverse. Once candidates are selected, a panel is set up that must include HR, the line manager, an EE representative, and often a technical expert for engineering roles. You’ll book the venue or Teams link, print interview packs with the CV, job description, and scoring sheet, and on the day you’ll meet candidates, verify their ID and certificates, act as timekeeper, and take neutral, factual notes on what they say rather than your opinion of them.
