      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      3 May 2024
      Anonymous employee
      London, England
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Glasswall (London, England) in Oct 2023

      Interview

I had a very good experience interviewing at Glasswall. During all the interview stages, I found that it was really a 2-way process allowing me to ask as many questions as I had, not only about the company and the tech but also the people, any personal development and growth, …. I also liked that part of the technical interview was also oriented towards what Glasswall does allowing me to have an idea of what I could be working on during the interview. It was also good to see that the company was very human and wasn't just looking for a 'senior coder' but also somebody able to grow as well as being able to present/communicate, being curious and able to learn. The interview process was quite quick and I was able to get relevant feedbacks at every stage.

      Application

      Interview

During the remote interview process, I underwent three stages. The second interview involved a pleasant one-on-one round, which went smoothly. However, the third and final round was more daunting, with five senior software engineers present. It felt like a good cop, bad cop situation, with one interviewer appearing overly domineering. At one point, he interrupted to assert his superiority, demanding that I revisit a previous page, despite the interview progressing well until then. This behavior made it clear that he felt the need to demonstrate his authority, which left me with reservations about potentially working with someone of that demeanor. Although we were forewarned about potential feedback, it was disappointing to receive none after weeks of waiting and thorough preparation. So if your not 100 percent wanting this job, the likelihood of you using this for constructive feedback is somewhat limited. The interview questions primarily focused on basic concepts like destruction and construction, with a particular emphasis on one interviewer's dismissive attitude towards certain answers. There were also inquiries about casting, which felt outdated considering the prevalence of modern C++ features such as threading, mutexes, and smart pointers. In hindsight, it might have been a blessing to have not progressed further in the interview process, as the presence of the assertive interviewer overshadowed the overall experience.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Question on casting (list of a bout 10 different implementations) Question on construction and distruction (remember to add virtual destructor in base class) … Question on for loop and using char as index (so overflow issues)

Thank you for sharing your feedback, and we’re sorry to hear that your interview experience didn’t meet expectations. Our engineering roles involve a rigorous technical assessment, including a panel interview, to help us evaluate both technical and problem-solving skills. We’re disappointed to learn that one of the interviewers came across as overbearing, this isn’t the experience we want candidates to have. Professionalism and respect are key values for us, and your comments have prompted an internal review and updates to ensure future interviews reflect that standard. If you’d like to discuss your experience further, please feel free to reach out to our internal recruitment team.
