I applied through university. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at GlobalFoundries (Malta, NY) in Mar 2011
Interview
Sent in my resume 6 months before hearing back from them for the interview. Traveled to a hotel in Malta, NY. There were at least 20 of us staying in the hotel. I had hoped for an onsite, but the interview was placed for the whole day in the hotel. Each of us sat in front of a desk in the hotel and one interviewer would come in for a 45 minute interview. There were a total of 3 rounds, not much difference between each round of interview, so the same questions were asked over and over again.

Question 1
Why did you choose the particular university to attend?
Very simple interview for new college grad.
Basic questions about semiconductor physics ans fabrication. Phone interview 15-20 mins. followed by 3 two-panel interviews 45 mins each.
Phone interview was just a screening to get an idea about background and interests and info about the company.
In-person interviews: Questions about academic projects, research (if applicable). ICs basics and operation etc.

Interview
Had 1 on-campus interview with the hiring manager. Had a very friendly communication - I think he was looking most for a personality that could work well with technicians & fellow engineers.
However, confusing information from HR - originally they were on a hiring freeze so I wasn't interviewed, then 2 months later it was lifted..
