      Interview

I started with two rounds of phone screens, one hour each. Then went on-site for a day of interviews, 3 technical and one behavioral. Overall, went pretty smoothly! Everyone was polite and accommodating.

      Interview

There was a phone interview for the first round followed by a technical phone interview for the second round. They give you information on the best way to study for the technical interview. Everyone was very nice and welcoming.

      Interview

I usually don’t write reviews after phone screens, but the process here was horrible. I have never been restricted to a coding language during the interview process at any company. However, Gusto made me choose between Ruby, Python, or JavaScript. None of which I am proficient in. Question was super easy however couldn’t get more than the first test to pass because I couldn’t get my syntax correct. I’m definitely not a bad programmer, I’ve interviewed at Unicorns and big tech companies, and received offers from some. Taking into account my performance at other company interviews, Gusto is not using the correct evaluation method for their software engineer candidates. They are looking for language proficiency NOT cs fundamentals proficiency. Would not recommend wasting time doing an interview (even for practice) unless you are proficient in one of the three languages stated above

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Given two hashmap type data structures (expected, actual) compare the two maps and return the differences in the maps. Map values can be another map or it can be an integer value. A map can look like the following: Apple - 3 Orange Banana - 4 Strawberry - 7 Key Apple maps to 3 Key orange maps to another map containing banana mapped to 4 and strawberry mapped to 7

We apologize that you had a poor interview experience with Gusto, and we'll be reviewing recent interviews to take action on this feedback. That said, we don't restrict any candidates to particular languages in our technical screens. Candidates are given the choice to complete the exercise in the language they feel most comfortable interviewing in, and we've seen folks be successful using a range of languages (C++, Java, Python, JS). We don't evaluate based on language proficiency - most engineers that interview at and/or join Gusto actually have no experience in Ruby or JS. We appreciate your feedback and will be flagging to interviewers to make sure future candidates don't feel pressured to code in a specific language.
