I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Gusto (San Francisco, CA) in Apr 2015

      Interview

There were several steps to the interview process. After applying online I was invited to participate in a one-way interview using SparkHire, this involved recording answers to several questions provided by ZenPayroll. There was no time limit and you were allowed to re-record answers as many times as necessary. After that, there was an "open-internet test." This was more to test your ability to find and synthesize information rather than an assessment of payroll knowledge. Finally, I was invited into the office for an interview with three separate members of the ZenPayroll family.

      Interview

The interview process with ZenPayroll was refreshing and overall a great experience! I applied online and heard back within 1-2 days with an invitation to a one-way video interview through SparkHire (5 questions with unlimited takes). After I submitted the video interview, a recruiter got back to me with instructions to complete an open-internet take home assignment. It consisted of two main parts- the first tested my customer service skills and the second tested analytical skills, specifically my ability to research and convey information in a coherent manner. Although it did take a few hours to complete, I thought the exercise was a great representation of the skills I would need to excel in a customer success position. Again I heard back within a very timely manner, and was invited to come into the office for final in-person interviews. Although some have expressed that the one-way video interview is an impersonal approach, I personally believe it provides better insight into an individual and their values, which is something that's clearly very important to ZenPayroll and can often be lost in tangents within a phone screen conversation. The interview process is definitely a unique one, but rightfully so for a unique company.
