Senior Software Development Engineer In Test Interview

      6 Jul 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Santa Monica, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Hallmark Labs (Santa Monica, CA) in Jun 2019

      Interview

Overall, the process was slow. I didn't mind, but it may not fit into everyone's timeline. The lowlight was the in-person interview with two Senior SDETs. Overall it was poor and I was deeply offended by it. First, the inoffensively bad parts: - No one can stop complaining about their InfoSec team. You're conducting an interview, stop complaining about your workplace. - One of the Senior SDETs was clearly not senior level. He made some strange comment about how every SDET first learns to code by learning Robot Framework (?!?!). The second SDET I'm not sure about, but apparently he was responsible for hiring and interviewing the first one, so you can imagine how this went. - This is a technical position, yet there was no coding/whiteboarding, no algorithms or design questions, no real thought exercises. The only question along these lines was, how would you deal with a crappy InfoSec team. Seriously, get over it. - Much of the interview was dedicated to "I didn't read your resume before I walked into the room" type questions. (The phone interview with the manager was much the same). List tools and languages, etc. The rest of the interview was yes or no questions. Have you heard of this? Have you heard of that? - The second SDET seemed to speak English as a third or fourth language. It was not terrible at a conversational level, but he had trouble putting together questions that I could understand, and he clearly had difficulty comprehending answers. The first SDET would try to clarify what the second was saying, but his clarifications had little to do with the question. The offensively bad part: Later I learned that they claimed I said things that I didn't say -- some were topics that I don't even remember coming up, some were the exact opposite of what I said. Either way, total misrepresentations of me. Was that malicious? Were they just terrible listeners? Were they just screwing around? I don't know, but I've never experienced anything like that in an interview. The next day I had another in-person interview with another company, and it was a night-and-day difference in substance.
