I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Incipient (NJ) (Rutherford, NJ) in Sept 2020
Interview
The worst interviewers: I received an email from the COO requesting an interview. An invitation was sent via Google calendar for a Zoom meeting with the COO and CEO. Both were very abrasive and rather than interviewing for a marketer with expertise in marketing automation, content development and content management (as advertised) they picked apart my resume and asked questions pertaining to business development and sales rather than marketing.
If you are interviewing for the marketing position be sure to ask up front what the role entails. There is a misconception that marketing is sales. It seems like these guys are looking for a sales/digital marketer despite their ad.
Another weird question was “how will you plan an event and vet leads for the event?” If you’re a marketer, you’d know this is a loaded question. There are many considerations, from budget to venue, securing dates, branding, stakeholders meetings etc. Each of these answers was responded with “we already have the venue” or “we already have the dates” or “we have the branding already”. They should’ve asked, how would you get leads for an event/trade show you’re participating in? They are poor communicators, unable to recognize effective communicators, and ineffectively articulate their needs (example, the misleading job description asking for marketer instead of a lead generator). Most of my interview questions were in this format. I left the interview pretty shaken as if I walked out of a fight where I had to defend myself. They were very abrasive, stern, and seemed determined to trip you by retorting every answer with “why’s that” “why was that the budget.” Like, I don’t know, if stakeholders really want a paint splash in their logo because they like the look, as a marketer you make it happen for them! Crazy questions for an entry-level role. They could’ve learned more about me and my content experience/marketing automation if they were so, focused on finding flaws.
If interviewing just be aware. No one should have to deal with people like this especially if dealing with Covid job loss.
