      Software Application Engineer Interview

      11 Mar 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Kelvin (San Francisco, CA) in May 2021

      Interview

After an initial screening with HR on LinkedIn, I did a coding challenge which took maybe 4 or 5 hours. After that, I had approximately 6 hours worth of interviews over two days. The engineering people were fantastic to talk with. It's obvious that there is a lot of skill, experience, and innovation in their ranks. The management type people I talked to, however, definitely raised some red flags. When I asked about some of the negative online reviews, a person with "VP" in their title got a little more defensive than I thought was appropriate. I get that it's a sensitive topic, but as a potential employee, it's important to hear what the company has to say about it. Also, the terms "rock star" and "10x programmer" were thrown around a lot. Experienced software engineers recognize these terms to mean "someone who will work twice as much for half the pay." Once I heard these terms, I knew the company wasn't for me. Seems like they agreed since they ghosted me after the sixth interview.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

The coding challenge simulated receiving data from a REST endpoint and building some information from it. From what I remember, it was a little tricky but not too bad. The technologies used included Python and Docker.
