      Member Onboarding Manager Interview

      17 Feb 2019

      Negative experience

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Life Time (Cary, NC) in Feb 2019

      Interview

I initially applied for the team development manager position and 12 days after I submitted my resume I got an email from the personal trainer manager saying she wanted to set up a phone call about a personal trainer position. I emailed back by clarifying I had applied for the team development manager and she said that was filled but wanted to discuss other leadership roles. Set up a call for the next day and she said she wanted me for the member onboarding manager which would be selling personal training and assigning to trainers. Then states based on my personal training experience and management experience I would be their highest level(5) and said I would make 58% commission. Mind you I live in MD and applied in NC as my husband and our 5 month old wanted to relocate. We set up a day and time the next week to go to the club in person and she said she would email me a packet to read about the club as I wasn’t super familiar with the chain. She said they had 19,000 members and 28 trainers but needed 38 because the trainers couldn’t keep up with the demand and were making 10k/month had no more room in their schedule. She said my salary requirements would be extremely easy to hit. 4 days later still no packet and I emailed her, no response. I then texted her a day later and she finally sent it. It was an employment intro packet in which they talk about the pay structure which was intensely confusing so I was going to ask about it. Red flag number 1 was that there was virtually no PTO and that I would be working starting at 50 hours/week. Got to NC and I hand it to them the facility is gorgeous and I would be a member there. I waited for her and then a guy comes to get me and noted my outfit(she said business professional attire) and said that’s going to be hard to demonstrate exercises in that. I was wearing a business dress. Then he took me up to meet the woman I was supposed to meet with and I spoke with the two of them in which they asked me 4 times “why lifetime?” And I reiterated I wasnt pfamiliar but from looking at the website and seeing the pictures and member reviews it looked like something I wanted to be part of. She asked what questions I had. I asked about the pay structure and confirmed I was a level 5. She then said I was a level 1 because that’s where they start onboarding specialists. I was confused as we had spoken about onboarding manager in charge of specialists and being level 5. She brushes that off and then said they had what’s called a draw system and that it was confusing to explain unless I’m in it and after i started it would make sense. She talked about how I could make commission off of everything i sell:training, supplements, etc. and that I could actually train clients as well. So I’m thinking I can make 58% off of all this and I could really rake in money only to realize she got that magical number from 23% for sales and 35% for service. In reality if I sell training I get 23% and if I actually trained it would be 35%. But I couldn’t assign clients to myself so it would be impossible to make that number. But that in my “spare time” I could walk around trying to sell. Then it hit me I would have to sell 17k just to make 4K/month. Next she shipped me off with the guy for practical part and said circle back when we were done. He then gave me a typed out scenario of a client and said to write out a 1 year plain for him(this takes time btw not 20 min like we had) the scenario included someone with a shoulder and knee injury. He was asking questions to get me to say very particular exercises to do when there was actually a wide variety and I even stated why I chose what I chose. He said that works but I like this one. Who cares if it’s what you like when this one also works as you just said?! He then said at 3pm(after 20 min with me) I have to go pick up my kids let’s go find her. She wasn’t in her office and we had to wait for her as no one knew where she went. She finally appears and tells me later that evening she’ll email me the next step and continue with the hiring process. He tells me to detail a 1 year plan for the scenario and send it that night. I reminded him I’m in from out of town and driving back right after that and that I could get it to him the next day. A detailed plan could take a couple hours. On the drive home I read reviews on here as I was left the interview more confused and like I had wasted my time. Boy I wish I had read reviews before!! People explained the draw system and commission and it was as bad as I thought. Stay far far away from this place!! The woman didn’t email me a next step. I emailed her 5 days later and stated I wasn’t no longer interested in the position as there was to much confusion about what role since we talked on the phone about one thing and she said another. The next day I got an email saying I was selected to be a personal trainer....still a step down!
