      Senior Software Developer Interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at MaintainX (Montreal, QC) in Jun 2024

      Interview

First interview was with HR. Didn't receive a greeting or any plesantries, just went straight into question one and so on. Found that a little off-putting. Prior to the second interview I was advised to download the mobile app and use it. Second interview was more strict with a manager that sounded like he was on a mission to make his mark in the company and demanded a lot. He asked whether I had checked out the app, which I proceeded to talk about both the things I liked and the areas I could see for improvement. I made it to the 3rd part which was the 7-day coding challenge. *Disclaimer: I looked up the other reviews on glassdoor prior to interviewing and did not like what I read, specifically about the code challenge being use as potentially unpaid solicited work. However I decided to see for myself and take what I read with a grain of salt. I spent quite a bit of time on the code challenge. Not because I found it too difficult or couldn't handle it but rather because it was a fun challenge to work on. It was also extremely subjective. There were some basic guidelines however many things were left as "show us where you shine". I fulfilled all the requirements and even did several extras hoping to show that I was more than capable of doing this work. I felt very confident in my solution and it was submitted. I received a brief template looking email saying they would not move forward with my candidacy. There was no constructive feedback or anything of use to me. This made me feel like the time and effort I had invested was completely disregarded. I insisted on receiving feedback especially after completing the longest code challenge i've ever even heard of in the industry. I have to agree with others, the challenge left me questioning the ethics of what was asked for. While I appreciated the continuity of the whole assignment, it was tailored to their domain and product so it's not a stretch to assume this could be fishing for free ideas for the company. The other interview reviews do have a general theme going on and it has been echoed over the years. The company has responded with the traditional "we strive to do better and we appologize" yet it is clear that these are simply empty words and no actions have been taken to remedy this situation. A couple weeks after this process I was talking with colleagues in the industry and they were much more informed about this company and the internal issues that are happening there. Some had previously applied while others knew of several current employees and conditions at the office. While I don't feel I should air their dirty laundry, in hindesight I am greatful that I was passed up. I highly suggest the company takes some serious actions to improve the hiring process, make this code challenge more reasonable in length and not tailored to their domain to avoid ethical constraints and above all, treat the potential candidates like humans. We spend our valuable time and hard work going through this process, the least you can do is make us feel like we are respected and our time and efforts acknowledged.

We acknowledge that a balance needs to be struck between a challenging assignment and respecting candidates’ time and effort. This is why we offer live and take home tests so that developers may choose the format that helps them put their best foot forward. The goal is not to innovate around product features, but to get a sense of the candidates’ product engineering and web development skills. It is also an opportunity to introduce our product to the product driven developers we are seeking. Our intention is for our assignment to be an opportunity for candidates to showcase their coding and problem solving skills. Overall Perception: We are committed to continuously improving our hiring processes and your feedback is a crucial part of that effort. Ensuring that all candidates feel respected and valued throughout the process is a priority for us. Thank you once again for your detailed feedback. Interview

I did three round of interviews. One call with the recruiter, one with the engineering manager and one take at home test. The take home test is very vague: no guidelines, no instructions other than do the best you can so we can evaluate you. I got a generic rejection email without any feedback.

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at MaintainX (Montreal, QC) in Feb 2024

      Interview

Application I applied to MaintainX through a recruiter, and the process lasted for four weeks. I interviewed in February 2024. Interview The interview process placed an excessive emphasis on technical assessments, comprising two product sense interviews, a homework assignment, and a presentation. 5 meetings in total. One of the sense meetings was with Paul Smear, a developer who demonstrated openness and competence. However, the homework assignment raised ethical concerns and bordered on illegality. It required building a fully functional app for managing work orders and reports that tries to show some proficiency on backend. Essentially soliciting free ideas and work akin to unpaid consultancy. During the interview, I encountered challenges. It was conducted by the most senior developer on the team and another individual from EX-Shopify three months hired. They seemed to only value opinions that aligned with their own and were not open to alternative viewpoints. Their arguments were aggressive, and despite the position being for a front-end developer, they focused solely on back-end questions, expecting me to conform to their expectations. Furthermore, the lack of feedback upon rejection left me feeling that my efforts were disregarded. This reflects poorly on the company's values, suggesting a fear of legal repercussions rather than a commitment to fairness. Most concerning was the lack of direction during the interview. It seemed that the oldest developer and the individual from Shopify relied heavily on ego rather than merit to assess candidates (french people vibes). Overall, this experience highlighted significant shortcomings in MaintainX's interview process, indicating a need for improvement in transparency, fairness, and adherence to ethical standards.
